Donna Engstrom USA "I am a painter and over the last three years have been exploring the female figure in all her splendour - daughter, mother, goddess. For me, these collages illustrate the beauty and mystery of women of all ages and cultures." |

Jane Wynn USA Working on these collages was a bit of a struggle for me - I am used to working sculpturally and I have forgotten what it is like to work on paper. I became obsessed with the number 13: my grandmother whom I grew up with always said that 13 was her favorite number and she loved Friday 13th. I found images of women from the 1920's - 1940's and that made me think of my grandmother. Even with her being gone now for over ten years, she still finds a way to always be with me, as she told me she would. I had figured out an "idea" about the number 13 and death notices and needed to wait just long enough to get them from the local paper- that is why my package was a bit late- I needed to "go" with the whole authenticity of dates and time - Kind of like being superstitious ... they are a bit on the strange side if you think about the whole "obituary" thing - but as I see it- I am memorializing these women. Cheryl Muirson New Zealand. I was reading the story of King Midas to my junior art class as a motivation for their art work, with the offshoot that it motivated me as well. All these collages have sayings to do with gold. |
Third International Bakers Dozen Collage Exchange Each artist made 13 collages. The one work from each artist which is shown in this Internet exhibition, was also exhibited in New Plymouth, New Zealand, and was then sent to the Museo de Collage in Mexico. A package of 12 mixed collages was sent back to each participating artist. |

Judy Finer
Judy Finer USA. Printed books are the source of all elements: The stamps are printed pages taken from a small book, Postmark Paris, a gift to me from a friend. The collaged birds are cutouts from a 1930's illustrated guide to North American birds; the added text is taken from an old dictionary. I mean these small pieces to be evocative of the spirit of Baker's Dozen - art (the French stamps themselves) and communication over distances, the carrying of messages(stamps and birds). I also use the birds as nods to Ernst and Cornell. In this series, I enjoyed playing with ambiguities of scale, picture plane illusions, visual puns, and the enigmatic beginnings of narratives. Like one-liners, the pieces were fun and fairly quick to do. This work is different from my usual collages. I typically use more elements and dense layering for greater visual/relationship complexities. |

Temple Terkildsen
Temple Terkildsen I used actual objects on a photocopier inside of plastic bags for a lot of them. Some are image transfer with acrylic medium. Some are on transparency film. The photocopier becomes my black and white camera for close up shots of intimate objects. I do not make copies of the copies, so it is basically a direct photo process. The images are original. There are no negatives. It is immediate gratification without any photo processing or harsh chemicals. Toner cartridges can be refilled, so it really cuts down on the impact on the environment. Temple lives and works in San Francisco, CA, USA |

Nancy Egol Nikkal
Nancy Egol Nikkal USA The substrate is Arches watermedia paper. The collage papers are a mix of appropriated papers torn from magazines like Art in America and Art News, fragments from color copies of other collages, and imported, hand-made papers from India, China and Japan. I used Cranes 100% rag paper for the color copies, and an archival PVA glue. |

Bonné de Blas
Bonné de Blas USA Spackle is another word for the plaster putty one puts in cracks or nail holes in the wall prior to painting. I was experimenting with the effect of old walls with torn advertisements/announcements still stuck on them--the thin layer of beeswax is to create a sheen. |

Haig Demarjian USA. The OLTGASM derives its name from Arisztid Olt, the short-lived pseudonym used in Hungarian films of 1917 by the actor borm Béla Ferenc Dezso Blasko, later known as Bela Lugosi. A one-of-a-kind, painstakingly hand-crafted piece of art, each OLTGASM is numbered and issued to select individuals by mail. It will alter and enhance any decor, is ideal for framing, simply pinning to a wall or propping on a mantle where it is sure to be an item of conversation and envy at your every soireé, shindig or hoot-nanny. Your heirloom-quality OLTGASM will serve you and generations of your offspring well as a coaster or trivet. Make it into a brooch or use as is for a handy and unique shoebox divider. Use it to surf the net. Simply pop it in the microwave for a marvellous snack the whole family is sure to enjoy. |
